In a notable shift within Europe’s aviation landscape, Istanbul Airport has surpassed Heathrow Airport to become the continent’s busiest airport in July. Istanbul Airport managed to handle 8.15 million passengers during the month, edging out Heathrow, which recorded 7.86 million passengers. This marks a significant moment for Istanbul Airport, which only commenced operations in 2018, as it continues to expand its reach and capacity.
The dip in Heathrow’s passenger numbers, a decline of 1.5% from the previous July, contrasts with Istanbul’s 2.3% rise in traffic. The decrease at Heathrow has been partly linked to disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, highlighting the vulnerabilities of international travel hubs to geopolitical tensions. This development has intensified calls for the UK government to greenlight Heathrow’s long-discussed third runway, aimed at alleviating the current strain on its two fully operational runways. The proposed £33 billion expansion is expected to boost the airport’s annual capacity to around 150 million passengers, enhancing the UK’s global connectivity in trade and tourism.
Heathrow officials have pointed to the latest passenger figures as evidence of the pressing need for expansion to maintain the UK’s competitive edge in international travel. With its existing infrastructure nearing capacity, the airport’s future growth hinges on the approval of the additional runway, a project that has been the subject of considerable debate and environmental scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Istanbul Airport continues to leverage its larger site and round-the-clock operations to solidify its status as a key global aviation hub. Currently operating with three runways, the airport is set to further increase its capacity with a fourth runway anticipated to be operational by the end of 2026, reinforcing its position in the international aviation market.
In the UK, other airports are also demonstrating growth, with London Stansted and Manchester airports experiencing record numbers in July. Stansted handled 3.1 million passengers, while Manchester saw 3.4 million, marking their busiest July ever. This surge in passenger numbers across different UK airports underscores the rising demand for air travel services, even as Heathrow grapples with capacity constraints.
