The balance of power in Sweden’s parliament teeters as the red-green opposition edges out the ruling Tidö parties with 176 seats to 173, according to preliminary election results. This outcome, if confirmed, could lead to a shift in policy direction, affecting everything from environmental regulations to social welfare programs in the country.

In the election, the Social Democrats captured 28.0% of the vote, securing 99 seats, while the Moderates followed with 19.8% and 70 seats. The Sweden Democrats garnered 17.5% of the vote and 62 seats, marking a significant change as they saw a decline of 11 seats compared to 2022. The Left Party, however, made gains, securing six additional seats for a total of 30. The Center Party and the Green Party won 25 and 22 seats, respectively, with the Christian Democrats also holding 22 seats. Meanwhile, the Liberals captured 19 seats with their 5.3% share of the vote.

This election saw a slight increase in voter participation, with a turnout of 84.8%, which is 0.6 percentage points higher than the previous election in 2022. The heightened engagement reflects growing public interest and stakes in Sweden’s political landscape amid global and domestic challenges.

While these results are based on preliminary counts, further checks are underway to finalize the seat distribution. Any adjustments in the final tally could further influence the political dynamics in the Riksdag, impacting legislative priorities and coalitions.
