The Netherlands is set to join a series of military exercises with Ukraine, taking place on European Union soil, as part of a larger effort to prepare a multinational force for potential deployment following a future ceasefire with Russia. These exercises, spearheaded by France and the United Kingdom, will see participation from multiple allied nations and will concentrate on aspects such as logistics and air defense. The Netherlands will finalize its specific role once operational requests are clarified, according to Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten.
This initiative is part of the Coalition of the Willing, a collective of 37 countries dedicated to offering long-term security support to Ukraine in the event of a peace agreement. The coalition underscores a global commitment to maintaining stability in the region and ensuring a robust response capability in the face of ongoing tensions.
In a related development, the Netherlands has teamed up with nine other European countries, including Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Italy, and Sweden, to embark on a joint venture with Ukraine aimed at creating a new European air defense system. The objective of this project is to develop more cost-effective and efficient missile technology, thereby bolstering Ukraine’s defensive measures and enhancing the broader security framework of Europe.
Dutch officials have indicated that the initial components of this new air defense system could be operational within a year, with more sophisticated features expected to be available in 18 months. This collaborative effort will involve European defense companies working alongside Ukrainian partners, aiming to reduce reliance on current missile systems while expanding the region’s defense capabilities.
